hotel congress

yeah. that's all we do. eat! an historic southwestern hotel in downtown tucson on congress ave, the breakfast was raved about...which was divine (something with roasted potatos and cream sauce), although i'm not going to write about it because it was several weeks ago and since i have no photos, well, i can't remember...so while we waited for our outside dining table, we wondered around inside...

ethiopian and tanque verde

our weekends in tucson are typically spent eating and hiking in the surrounding national forests. like every big city there is a plethora of restaurants, but we're particularly interested in the ethnically different selections, like ETHIOPIAN! (last week it was Indian...yum mango lasse and lamb korma!). i've never had ethiopian so this was all kinds of new surprises for my palette. traditionally served on a community platter lined with steamed bread kind of like a tortilla, we chose 6 different samples from main entrees. i can't remember the names of everything we had, but it was all delish!

the art and decor was authentic...the owner and our server was from ethiopia...what i liked the best was a wooden serving spoon and fork set with carved handles and wrapped wire...identical to the set i own and inherited from my granny...i always wondered where they came from.

tanque verde is a popular hangout place for locals, and not far from town, mainly because here in the sonoran desert a swimming hole of any size is a commodity. a short 1/2 mile to the lower falls took us to the most famous swimming hole...depth unknown, but deep enough to jump off the peering rocky cliffs. woohoo!!

indiana is the bestest...won't let anything bad happen to his momma...tying to save me

cafe passe

a very cool coffee shop on 4th in tucson, is quickly becoming my favorite place to frequent. across the street from my herb class is cafe passe. i can always appreciate a barrista who knows how to make my americano thick with glorious crema...mmmm.

also currently featured is the painter richard dennis, who's specialty is desert scenery, but instead of the blase kind i usually see in this area, his clouds and terrain are whimsical. i am in love with these !

homesteading

The Bisbee Blessing: across the street from the silver king hotel there is a building with a community organization called ecoasis...serena runs ecoasis...serena also works at high desert market, where i work...her good friend who helps at ecoasis, keith, is a housesitter for an indefinite 5 years on some property up the gulch...the property is in town, but not...it's the only house setting up the gulch that is in the county...and on one of the rocky slopes there just so happens to be enough space for a bell tent that was imported from england...right now i am sleeping several restful, blissful nights in a hammock that faces southwest where i can see the line of the rising sun crawling slower down the hill face as the morning presses on...finally, a place to hang my laundry...of course, none of this would be taking place without my loving partner jeoin, and the visions that we share. when the foundation is attached...i.e. the pallets are attached together, the tent will be erected, a ceremony will take place along with food and kindred peoples...and dogs..!!!.

my bff

she has a really cool blog dedicated mostly to food...fresh, raw, vegan, rare, creative, all sorts of delishesness...the link goes to her blog but in particular a post she did about edible ferns! i never knew this and i'm glad i do now. i'm always walking down the sidewalk/street plucking leaves and flowers and poppin' them in my mouth for a tasty fresh snack. so check out what you can do with these curly cute fernies!

bisbee grabbin' at my root ends

i'm a terrible writer. so i'm still baffled as to why i have a blog...but that is also why lots of times i just post pictures. so here's a great article on bisbee that was written in 2005 that glimmers a more accurate picture of what it's like here. i LOVE it here. too bad my roots aren't ready to grab dirt yet.

saguero national park

so i started writing the below and didn't realize i had already posted this blog. ha! so i'm posting dos.

the park itself was nothing to report back home about...in fact, the coronado park had more saguero than this one. plus, the sprawling burbs of tucson were visible right there at the edge of the park...and i don't mean just visible...i mean that i could see the toys in the sand box. but we kind of got lucky with the weather...typically people wouldn't go out in weather like this...rainy, foggy, cold....but this is a region that rarely sees quickly rolling fog in the craggy mountain cliffs accompanied with a drizzle that the desert flora instantly drinks up.
